Last week, Wildcats winger Semi Tadulala helped the children whose schools were taking part in ‘Read on
Wakefield’. ‘Read on Wakefield
’ is a campaign, which aims to hold a Wakefield Book Day, where events are organised throughout the city to celebrate reading. The main aim is to raise £10,000, in order to raise money for reading workbooks and texts for Primary School leavers.

Semi was invited to attend St. Michael’s School, Flanshaw to assist the children with their reading. Along with Semi was Daddy Cool, the Wildcats mascot who encouraged the children to read more. They both visited every year group within the school and then some of the children were lucky enough to interview the Wildcats’ star and ask Semi questions from what he enjoys reading and some of his favourite books to questions about Semi’s rugby league career.

After the question and answer session, Semi listened to the children read and supported them with their reading. Belle Vue Stadium has seen the addition of a Learning Zone, where children from schools across the Wakefield District choose to come down to the Learning Zone after school. Whilst at the Learning Zone, the children use the computers, improve their literacy, numeracy and I.C.T. skills and generally aid their education in an enjoyable and stimulating atmosphere. They also learn about the Wildcats and get to take part in a question and answer session with one of the Wildcats players.

Each group attends one afternoon per week for a period of 6 weeks and during their time in the Learning Zone, do many different activities, one of which is improving their reading skills.

Community Manager Davide Longo commented “When children attend the Learning Zone they are encouraged to read. As well as having ordinary books in there, there are plays and match day programmes for them. It’s important that they have a variety of reading material, as it keeps them interested in reading”
