Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have continued to build for 2015 with the signing of Matty Ashurst on a two-year deal.
Matty Ashurst will become a Wildcats player in 2015.
The 24-year old back-row forward will arrive at Trinity with plenty of Super League experience behind him having come through the famed St. Helens Academy system before spending the past three seasons with Salford Red Devils, racking up 119 top flight appearances in his career so far including 17 in 2014.
He becomes James Webster’s third new addition for 2015 following the signings of Craig Hall from Hull KR and Mickael Simon from Catalans Dragons whilst Reece Lyne, Nick Scruton and Scott Anderson have all penned contract extensions in recent months.
“I’m excited for a new challenge,” said Ashurst. “Webbo really sold the club to me and the work ethic that is in place there and I’m just looking to come and work hard and do my part for the squad.
“I suppose the next step for me is to take on a bit more of a senior role but I’m still quite young and know I’ve got improvement in me so I’m just aiming to play a regular part for the team and do my bit.
“I spoke to Tim Smith and he had good things to say about Wakefield. He’s really enjoying it and says it’s a good environment to be a part of so I’m looking forward to joining that.”
With the new league structure coming into place from 2015 the competition for the top eight places will be even more fierce and Ashurst is targeting a place amongst the elite for the Wildcats.
“Every year teams are aiming for that top eight and even more so next season with the new structure. Everyone will be wanting to achieve the same thing and I believe if we play to our potential then we’ve got a very good chance.”
“Matt has had a great education having come through at St. Helens and has played really well at Salford,” said Webster.
“He’s an extremely athletic and versatile player that can play both on the edge and in the middle. With Matt we have signed another young, promising British player that we think we can add plenty to our squad, especially with the ball.”
