Roy Sampson is a vastly experienced coach having 26 years of professional rugby league behind him through playing and coaching with his current role overseeing the scholarship coaches.
Sampson has a long history of coaching professional players and helped nurture current Wildcats stars Ben Cockayne and Richard Mathers and is a veteran of Hunslet Hawks, Dewsbury Rams, Wakefield Wildcats and Stanley Rangers.
One of many career highlights came in 2003 as head coach of the Hawks who were in the Championship 1 when he guided his team to Challenge Cup 3rd round victory against Tony Smith’s Huddersfield Giants. That win was, and still is the only third tier side to beat a Super League outfit in the prestigious cup competition.
A Hunslet legend in his own right from his playing days he captained the club for seven of his 14 year playing career and is currently in third position in the all time appearances record for the club. He was also granted a testimonial by the RFL in 1994 and is also currently the Outwood Grange year 11 coach where he has guided them to become four time national schools champions.
On top of his work for the Wildcats and Outwood he is the under 16 coach for Stanley to underline his dedication to help local talent become Super League standard players. Sampson spends three days a week at the club in working with the coaches on the technical aspects including team structure and game planning and describes the current intake of scholars as outstanding.
