Academy Earn Grand Final Place

Wakefield Wildcats Academy 12-4 Wigan Warriors Academy

The Wildcats Academy will play in the Gillette Academy Championship Grand Final after seeing off Wigan Warriors at the Hearwell Stadium.

Tries from Dale Morton and Danny Cowling in the first and second halves respectively were enough to get the better of the visitors from Lancashire, with Johnny Mallow’s first half score all Wigan had to show for their night’s work.

It extended the incredible unbeaten run to sixteen and
Wakefield now enjoy a two-week preparation for the final which will be played on Saturday 3rd October at the Hearwell Stadium.

The hosts began brightly and didn’t have to wait long for their first try.  First team squad member Cain Southernwood put in a 40/20 and after going through the tackles Cowling got his hands free to feed Morton who dived over in the left hand corner.

That was the Wildcats best spell as an attacking force in the first period though and the Warriors hit back on ten minutes.  Wigan forced a repeat set and straight from the scrum executed a training ground move for Johnny Mallow to cross.

The two teams were evenly matched, with the Wildcats lack of competitive action perhaps having effect as Wigan dominated territory with more urgency and go forward.

Despite that, and some average refereeing, Wakefield’s defence stood up well and the closest either side came to another score came when Luke Pettman was held up over the line a couple minutes shy of the half-time whistle.

It was an improved Wakefield side that came out in the second half and they got the crucial score on 54 minutes.

Speed at the ruck caught the Wigan defence on the hop and Matty Wildie spotted space on the left and expertly guided a kick for Cowling to finish.

Seven minutes later and with the Wildcats stamping their authority on the game Jordan Grayston knocked over a penalty from bang in front to stretch the lead to eight points.

For all Wigan’s efforts and some questionable decisions by the man with the whistle from Castleford, Wakefield’s defence never really looked like being penetrated.

Adam Slater was harshly adjudged to have had a second movement when he got over the whitewash with eight minutes remaining but it proved irrelevant.

Tony Drury’s young charges had done enough to earn themselves a place in the Grand Final and home advantage on Saturday 3rd October.

Wakefield: Colleran, Morton, Cowling, Walshaw, Gibson, Southernwood, Henderson, Spiers, Wildie, Slater, Trout, Harrington, Annakin. Replacements: Pettman, Griffin, Grayston, Lowther.
