Academy End Regular Season With Another Win

Posted on Saturday, 22 August 2009 04:16PM by Wakefield Wildcats Media Department

The Wildcats Academy Grade rounded off the regular season in impressive fashion with a 40-24 victory over third placed Warrington Wolves.

A seven try success extended their unbeaten run to fifteen games and rubber stamped their position at the top of the table as Tony Drury’s side now look ahead to the play-offs.

Wakefield began well and had a Joel Gibson try chalked off after just four minutes after he was adjudged to have put his foot into touch before getting the ball down.

However, the home side didn’t have long to wait for their first score with Danny Cowling intercepting a loose pass and sprinting 40 metres to go in under the posts.

Warrington had a try of their own disallowed a couple of minutes later and were left to rue that decision when Tom Harrington showed neat footwork and balance to make the break before shipping onto Chris Annakin to race 25 metres to touchdown.

The visitor’s responded just after the quarter mark through a Bobby Goulding try, but Harrington scored a try of his own on 31 minutes after spinning out of the tackle and reaching for the line.

Scott Leatherbarrow reduced the half-time deficit to eight points for the men in primrose and blue with a four-pointer five minutes before the interval.

They drew within four points shortly after the break when Rhys Evans finished off the overlap to score, but Jordan Lowther’s converted try restored the ten point lead for Trinity.

Matty Wildie burrowed his way over from couple of metres out on 55 minutes, with Will Colleran rounding off a good team move on the hour mark to put the game beyond any reasonable doubt.

James Laithwaite pulled one back for Warrington who then knocked-on from the restart and from the resultant set Kyle Trout powered his way over the line.

A Ryan Shaw try meant the visitors had the last word on the afternoon, but Wakefield can now enjoy their three week break ahead of the play-offs after maintaining their excellent unbeaten run.

Wildcats: Colleran, Grayston, Cowling, Walshaw, Gibson, Southernwood, Lowther, Spiers, Wildie, Trout, Slater, Harrington, Annakin, Pettman, Joynt, Griffin, Buttery.
