An 'oarsome' result

BBC Commentator Dave Woods, the organiser of the Carnegie Marathon Rowing Challenge, that was staged at Leeds Metropolitan Univesity last Thursday has sent a message of thanks to the people from Rugby League who took a part and their sponsors.
Wakefield Trinity first team coach Paul Broadbent led a four man team from the Wildcats and they had to see how long it took them to row a marathon distances - more than 42,000 etres - ona gymnasium rowing machine.
They joined teams from other Engagde Super League and Co-operative Championship clubs as well as individuals including former Great Britain skipper Paul Sculthorpe.
Woods said: "We just wanted to say thank you for taking part yesterday in what so many people have said was just such a fantastic day. "You helped raise £15,000 for the Rugby League Benevolent Fund, which is an astonishing effort by every one of you. "When we started to organise this we had no idea what kind of response we would get, but we should have taken into account that we were dealing with the Rugby League family and that your support would have been as overwhelming as it was. There were so many great stories on the day. Everyone had a personal challenge and it was inspiring to see so many taking on and beating those rowing machines. "Probably the best moment of the day was seeing John Power's epic effort of 5hours and 26mins and the crowd of people applauding him over the last 500 metres. We think he might be the only wheelchair athlete to row a marathon and, if so, he's a world record holder now! "The craic throughout was brilliant and thank you again, all of you, for contributing to a truly memorable day. "We plan to do it all again next year, hope to see you then."
