Ban on buying eight pasties!
A SUPERMARKET trip turned into a comical farce for one shopper who was threatened with police action after he tried to buy eight cornish pasties. Andrew Williamson expected TV prankster Jeremy Beadle to jump out from the aisles in Tesco when he was banned from buying his family's tea.
Mr Williamson, who owns A2B Taxis in Ossett, was told there was a six pasty rule when he got to the till at the store in Batley on Sunday.
He said: "I couldn't believe it. They're Ginsters pasties, not paracetamol, it's not like you can overdose on them.
"I asked if there was a sign telling people about this rule – and they said no, there wasn't.
"There were about 20 members of staff around the till – I felt like a criminal – people probably thought we'd been shoplifting. "They even threatened me with the police."
Mr Williamson was buying the pasties for his family's tea and told staff if he bought six he and his wife would have to go without.
He added: "I asked if we could go out and send one of the kids in to buy two more but they said no.
"So I asked how customers are supposed to know about the stupid rule and was told customers are supposed to go up to customer services to find out what they can and cannot buy before shopping. I wouldn't mind, but I'd bought 10 sausage rolls the week before without any problem."
Eventually the family were allowed to buy the offending pasties, which had been reduced to 18p because they were past the sell-by date.
Mr Williamson said: "I think they gave in just to get rid of us. It is absolutely ridiculous to put a restriction on something as harmless as a pasty."
A Tesco spokesman said: "We would like to apologise if Mr Williamson felt mistreated in any way and for this inconvenience. "We try and operate a common sense approach to multi-purchasing and need to ensure the widest range of products is available for everyone.
"In some stores, which may carry smaller amounts of some stock, we may limit the sale of some products. If a customer would like to 'bulk buy' a product on a regular basis we encourage them to speak to the store manager, who will be happy to place an order."
