engage Super League- Round 23
Salford City Reds vs. Wakefield Wildcats
The Willows
Kick-off: 8pm

The Wildcats and the City Reds go head-to-head tonight both looking to put behind them disappointing results in the last round of Super League fixtures.

The Form Book

Last weekend was one to forget for both clubs, with the highly anticipated derby between Wakefield and Castleford going in favour of the men from the Jungle courtesy of the a flawless kicking display from Joe Westerman.  Dean Widders’ two converted tries were matched by Danny Brough, but indiscipline cost the Wildcats as Westerman kicked his team to a 20-12 win.

It came on the back of two impressive Wildcats performances which resulted in a heartbreaking defeat to Leeds Rhinos and a memorable away win over St. Helens.

Salford actually led Warrington Wolves 20-12 at half-time last weekend, but capitulated to an eleven try defeat and were kept pointless in the second period as the Wolves romped to a 62-20 win.

Prior to that Shaun McRae witnessed his side lose by six points at home to Castleford and 25-12 away to the Crusaders.  However, the Reds showed what they are capable of by stunning Saints 20-10 having raced into a 16-0 half-time lead.

Team News

Wakefield are again without Tony Martin (shoulder) and Matt Petersen (knee/hip) for the trip to Greater Manchester, whilst Aaron Murphy fractured his jaw in the defeat to the Tigers last weekend- the same injury that is keeping Frank Winterstein on the sidelines.

Academy stars Cain Southernwood and Dale Morton are in the 19-man squad in their absence.

Salford have added a teenager of their own in their 19-man squad to cover for injuries.  Lewis Palfrey is named in place of Jordan Turner who joined the list of injured three-quarters at the Willows and he is expected to be missing for a while with a back injury.

Tony Martin is again ruled out with a shoulder injury

Previous Meetings

The Reds were the first visitors to the Hearwell Stadium in Super League XIV back in February with Damien Blanch opening the scoring for the first of his two tries.

Ryan Atkins also helped himself to two tries with Oliver Wilkes adding a further four-pointer in a 29-10 win.

Trinity last visited this particular corner of Grater Manchester in July 2007 and came away with the spoils.

Atkins again claimed two tries as the Wildcats ran in six in all with Ben Jeffries, Jamie Rooney, Peter Fox and Duncan MacGillivray also touching down.
