engage Super League- Round 16
Wakefield Wildcats vs. Hull FC
Hearwell Stadium
Saturday 13th June 2009
Kick-off: 6pm

LIVE on Sky Sports

Wakefield welcome the famous black and white jerseys of Hull FC to the Hearwell Stadium as the two playoff hopefuls battle it out for two priceless Super League points.  The Wildcats are three home games without a win in all competitions and John Kear and his men are keen to bring that run to an end.

The Form Book

One victory in seven outings is the Wildcats run going into tomorrow night’s encounter against a Hull FC side who were the last team to be beaten by Wakefield before the barren run.

After crushing Celtic Crusaders on their own soil a fortnight ago when both Jamie Rooney and Brad Drew claimed a brace of tries apiece, the Wildcats were brought back down to earth with a scrappy 36-22 reverse against Bradford Bulls.

Despite matching the Bulls’ five tries Wakefield lost comfortably thanks to the immaculate goal kicking of Paul Deacon, with the away sides indiscipline also costly in a game where the sides shared 27 penalties.

A trio of defeats to Warrington Wolves, Leeds Rhinos and then last weekend to St. Helens has seen the Airlie Birds slip out of the top eight for the first time in 2009.

The narrow defeat to the Wolves came after back-to-back wins against Salford City Reds and Castleford Tigers had given fresh impetus to a challenge on the top four.  But resounding defeats to Saints and Leeds have left coach Richard Agar far from impressed with his side’s performances.

Team News

Coach Kear will not be able to call on the services of skipper Jason Demetriou for the first time this campaign after he underwent knee clean-out surgery on Monday, whilst Ryan Atkins is in Paris with the England squad and is unavailable.

Their places are taken by props Jay Pitts and Richard Moore, with Luke George missing out.  Aaron Murphy has had the cast removed from his wrist but is still up to a couple of weeks away from being ready for first team action, with Kevin Henderson still absent on compassionate leave.

Tony Martin broke his nose against the Bulls but is fit to play tomorrow night

Mark Calderwood is definitely out for the black and whites and the game could come a week too soon for Graeme Horne and Willie Manu.

Youngster Tom Briscoe isn’t expected back fit until August, with Josh Hodgson replacing Calderwood in the only change to the 19-man squad from the games with both the Rhinos and Saints.

Previous Meetings

The two clubs met at the end of the busy Easter schedule at the KC Stadium where the Wildcats made it three wins in a week thanks to a 21-14 win.

Demetriou scored the first Wakefield try before Scott Grix, Pitts and then Oliver Wilkes completed the scoring.

Jay Pitts scored one of the Wildcats tries in the victory at the KC Stadium earlier in the season, and he returns to the 19-man squad this week

Wakefield have an awful recent home run against tomorrows opponents with the last home victory over Hull FC coming on August 30th 2003.  The Wildcats’ 35-28 win was the only time in the history of Super League that the West Yorkshire club have made the most of home advantage.

In all 14 meetings in the summer era at the Hearwell Stadium the Wildcats have lost thirteen to their East Yorkshire opposition.

Pre-match Entertainment

As always there will be a host of pre-match activities prior to the big kick-off to keep you entertained, including an open age touch rugby competition involving a number of local teams- including one from Wakefield College.

The Wildcats Community Team hosted Junior Wildcats Activity sessions over the recent half-term, and some of the children from these will take part in a 'Mini Olympics' tomorrow.

And, of course, the Wildcat Dolls will be performing to complete the build up to kick-off.

Other Information

There will be a bucket collection for the three members of the Wildcats staff (Davide Longo, Ed Curran and Richard Cattley) who are aiming to reach their £4,400 target for the ‘Four Peaks Challenge’ they will be attempting in three weeks time.  Please give what you can.

Community Trust draw tickets will be available from our match day volunteers around the ground for just £1.  A £100 prize and a wine and dine for two at the next Wildcats home game awaits the winner and the remaining money raised goes straight to the Wildcats Community Trust.

Ticket information

Tickets will be available on the day with prices beginning at £18 for adults and £10 for concessions.

After the match

With the Sky Sports big screen in place fans are invited to stay in the Hearwell Stadium after the final whistle to watch England’s international with France where Wildcats centre Ryan Atkins looks set to start.
