Big Match Preview: Wakefield Wildcats vs. Leigh Centurions

Carnegie Challenge Cup Fourth Round
Wakefield Wildcats vs. Leigh Centurions
Belle Vue Stadium
Kick-off: 8.00pm

Wakefield’s Challenge Cup campaign gets underway this evening as Leigh Centurions visit Belle Vue in the Fourth Round stage of the famous competition.  The Wildcats made it all the way to the semi-finals last season before losing out to Hull FC at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster, and John Kear and his side are looking to go a couple better in 2009.

The Form Book

The Wildcats were on the wrong end of a 42-18 scoreline last Friday when St. Helens were the visitors to West Yorkshire.  A Leon Pryce hat-trick helped the Saints to a comfortable victory on a disappointing night for Wakefield.

Leigh saw off the challenge of Doncaster in the Co-Operative Championship last weekend by 24 points to 18.  The previous weekend saw a shock defeat to Batley and at half-time at the Keepmoat last time out they were level at 18-18.  But full-back Ian Mort’s brace of tries and four goals helped seal the win.

Team News

John Kear includes new signing Frank Winterstein in his 19 man squad for the Cup tie after the new arrival had his first week of full training with his new teammates this week.  The Wildcats are still without Brad Drew, Jamie Rooney, Richard Moore, Matt Petersen, Tony Martin and Ricky Bibey through injury.

Previous Meetings

Leigh are still seeking a Challenge Cup win over Wakefield since they fought a scoreless draw in the first ever round of the competition back in 1897. They forced another draw in 1947, but Wakefield have won the other six Cup-ties. Leigh, however, won 40-18 at home the last time they met, in Super League in 2005. But their last win at Wakefield was 41-8 back in 1993 in a Stone Bitter Championship (top division) match.
