Big Match Preview: Wakefield Wildcats vs. Catalans Dragons

Posted on Saturday, 19 September 2009 12:25PM by Wakefield Wildcats Media Department

engage Super League Elimination Play-Off
Wakefield Wildcats vs. Catalans Dragons
Hearwell Stadium
Kick-off:8pm

History will be made when Wakefield and Catalans run out at the Hearwell Stadium tonight as the first ever Super League play-off at Belle Vue gets underway.

The Wildcats finished the regular season in fifth and now face a Dragons side who earned their place in the top eight with an impressive win at St.Helens last week.

Tickets are still going to be available on the gate priced at the normal match day rate so make sure you are part of an historic night for the club by getting to the game.  Gates open at 5.30pm and the big
screen will show St. Helens vs. Huddersfield Giants so you can enjoy a feast of play-off Super League.

The Form Book

Wakefield are on their best run of form at the ideal time after last week’s 24-10 win over Hull KR made it five on the spin for John Kear’s men.

It is a run that has included wins over Salford City Reds, Celtic Crusaders, Warrington, Rovers and today’s visitors Catalans out in the South of France when Luke George picked up a couple of tries in a 30-24 success.

The Dragons have been consistently inconsistent throughout large chunks of the campaign but bounced back from the defeat against Wakefield a fortnight ago by beating Saints at Knowsley Road to assure them of their play-off place.

It was a play-off place that hung in the balance when Bradford Bulls thumped them 42-18 at the end of August, but the Dragons are capable of putting in big performances when it matters and so was the case last weekend.

Team News

John Kear is boosted by the return of Brad Drew, Luke George and Steve Snitch after they all sat out the win against Hull KR with knocks whilst Danny Brough is a doubt with the hip injury that forced him off the field against Rovers.

Damien Blanch, Ricky Bibey, Tony Martin and Sean Gleeson have all played their last games for the Wildcats in 2009.

Previous Meetings

It is Wakefield who enjoy the upper hand in recent meetings winning all three of the previous head-to-heads between the clubs.

As well as the win just two weeks ago Wakefield enjoyed a 30-10 win with five different try scorers. Gleeson, Martin, Blanch, Aaron Murphy and Ryan Atkins all crossed the whitewash.

SWAG Petition

Last week Stadium Wakefield Action Group (SWAG) launched a petition in support of the proposed Newmarket development.  The development- at the heart of which will be a 12,000 Community Stadium which they Wildcats are proposed tenants of- is now in the detailed planning stage and SWAG are looking for 10,000 signatures to show support for the development.

But SWAG don’t just want your signature they want your help gathering signatures.  If you want to help reach the 10,000 target meet outside the Wildcats Superstore at 7.00pm on Saturday to get your petition.

The club wholeheartedly encourages as many fans as possible to help SWAG gather signatures.

Ticket Information

Tickets will be available to buy on the day at the normal match day price. The £5 junior ticket WILL NOT be on sale as this was an advanced sale offer only.

The Wildcats Superstore will open at 4pm and not 10am as it normally does on a Saturday.
